WHEREAS, the Georgetown Road (Route 656) corridor is well developed with an existing high-volume mix of pedestrian, bicycle, vehicle and bus traffic; and


WHEREAS, Albemarle County, the Charlottesville-Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), and the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission (TJPC) have recognized the need for improvements to this corridors for bicyclists and pedestrians; and


WHEREAS, VDoT held a Design Public Hearing to solicit input on the proposed improvements for consideration of the preliminary design for proposed pedestrian facility improvements on Georgetown Road (Project: #0656-002-254,PE101, RW201, C501) (Federal Project #STP-002 UPC 12982), located in Albemarle County, Virginia; and   


WHEREAS, 24 respondents commented at or following the Public Hearing held on March 24, 2009; and


WHEREAS,  88 percent of respondents support the project; and


WHEREAS, after reviewing the options and considering all aspects of the proposed project, VDoT recommends approval of the project design as presented at the public hearing to provide safer pedestrian facilities between two major roadways, Barracks Road and Hydraulic Road; and


WHEREAS, the project will include replacing the existing sidewalk with a five foot wide concrete sidewalk, and the construction of three mid-block pedestrian crossings.


NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors does hereby support the improvements to Georgetown Road as proposed by the Virginia Department of Transportation.
