A communications report of activities from the Albemarle County School Board to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors
Administrative Changes: At its May 11, 2006 meeting, the Albemarle School Board announced the following administrative changes: Mrs. Betty Pitt, currently the Assistant Principal at Jack Jouett Middle School, has been named Assistant Principal at Henley Middle School, Ms. Kathryn Baylor, currently Principal at Sutherland Middle School, has been named the Principal of Jack Jouett Middle School, Mr. David Rogers, currently the Principal of Jack Jouett Middle School, has been named the Principal of Sutherland Middle School, Mr. Kyle Pursel, currently the Assistant Principal of Sutherland Middle School, has been named the Assistant Principal of Jack Jouett Middle School.
At its May 25, 2006 meeting, the Albemarle County School Board announced the following administrative changes: Mr. Bruce Benson, formerly the Executive Director for Curriculum, Instruction and Technology has been named the Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning effective June 1st, Dr. Luvelle Brown, the current Principal of Woodbrook Elementary School, has been named the Executive Director of School and Division Improvement effective July 1st, Mr. Don Vale, the current Principal of Henley Middle School, has been named the Executive Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Technology effective July 1st and Mrs. Bonnie Pendleton, currently an Assessment Specialist, has been named the Assistant Director of Assessment and Information Services effective July 1st.
Adoption of FY 06/07 School Board Budget: At its May 11, 2006 meeting, the Albemarle County School Board adopted the FY06/07 School Board budget. This resulted in an overall budget of $141,563,425 in operating and $14,830,310 in self-sustaining for a total budget of $156,393,735.
Capital Improvements Budget Restructuring: At its May 25, 2006 meeting, the Albemarle County School Board took action to reprioritize existing funds to provide additional funding in the amount of $1,899,900 for the Cale Addition project and $1,964,000 for the Monticello High School Auditorium project. The reprioritized funding of CIP funds is within the agreed upon debt service targets and does not change the required, current funding.
BoardDocs: The School Board received for information and direction at its May 25th meeting a presentation from BoardDocs. In the last several years, staff has been trying to increase efficiencies in the School Board Office in terms of processing board packets. BoardDocs has been developed for school boards, local governments, private and public boards to help alleviate the task of assembling, printing, distributing and revising agenda items and policies. If the Board decides to try this system, the money would be taken from the Board Reserve.
K-12 Language Arts Curriculum Framework: School Board Policy IFD: Curriculum Adoption specifies that the School Board adopt curriculum consistent with the Standards of Accreditation for all programs of instruction. In October of 2003, the Language Arts Vertical Team convened with the purpose of rearticulating the language arts curriculum framework to align with the Standards of Learning and the Framework for Quality Learning. The Language Arts Vertical Team will request conceptual approval to begin implementation of the new curriculum framework in 2006-07 with the understanding that the team, with input from teachers across the division, will continue to revise the document through the next school year. In Spring 2007, the team will request action to fully adopt the new curriculum framework.
