United Way Receives Grant for Insurance for Children Project

As many as 1,750 children in the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County lack health insurance, according to state estimates. The Virginia Health Care Foundation recently awarded a $93,605 grant to the United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area for its Insurance for Children Project to help children get health coverage.

The United Way, in partnership with the Albemarle County Department of Social Services and other community groups, is helping to enroll uninsured children in FAMIS (Family Access to Medical Insurance Security), a statewide program that helps eligible families provide affordable health insurance to their children.

FAMIS covers doctor visits, prescription drugs, tests, x-rays, hospital care, vision and dental care, eyeglasses and more. FAMIS has no enrollment costs or monthly premiums.  Some services may require a small co-pay, usually no more than $5. Preventative services like regular checkups are free. A family of four can earn up to $44,100 and qualify.

United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area is employing a part-time outreach worker based at the United Way to assist families with completing applications.  As the key community partner, Albemarle County Department of Social Services is employing a part-time eligibility worker stationed at UVA Medical Center to efficiently process applications from eligible families.

United Way and its partners are using a variety of strategies to increase awareness of FAMIS eligibility that include outreach through the Albemarle County Public Schools, Charlottesville City Schools, materials distributed to local employers through the Chamber of Commerce, and information to child care providers involved with the Smart Beginnings school readiness initiative.  Outreach will also be conducted through the United Way’s partnerships in the Santa Fund, the Thomas Jefferson Area Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition and RxRelief Prescription Assistance Program.

For more information or application assistance, please contact Jennifer Zadory, Outreach Worker, at the United Way at 434-972-1706 or
