Grant Fund to Build Walnut Creek Park Accessible Playground
6/10/2010

Walnut Creek Park will be outfitted with a new accessible playground this summer thanks to a $60,000 grant from the R. K. Mellon Family Foundation.   The accessible playground will be designed for children ages 5 – 12 and will allow children with or without special needs to play with their peers and to experience the benefits of challenging outdoor recreation.  Because the facility will also be barrier free, parents with or without special needs will be able to safely and comfortably supervise and participate with their child.   The grant funds will cover all costs of the playground construction.

“The Walnut Creek master plan has always envisioned this type of inclusive family play area but until now we have not had the funds to build it”, said Bob Crickenberger, Assistant Director of Albemarle Parks and Recreation.  “This grant from the Mellon Family Foundation allows us to create a very special recreational space in an area of the county without any public facility of this nature.”

When completed later this summer, the playground will consist of approximately 25 – 30 active play components that will accommodate 60 users and will be located near both picnic shelters and the beach area.  Playground design, layout and installation will meet or exceed U.S. and international standards for safety and accessibility.
