Important Notice to Albemarle County Voters

November 7, 2017 General Election Information

A General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, for the offices of: Governor of Virginia, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Attorney General of Virginia, Virginia House of Delegates, and Board of Supervisors and School Board members for the Rio, Jack Jouett, and Samuel Miller Magisterial Districts. To see the choices that will be on your ballot on November 7, visit the Voter Registration website at www.albemarle.org/vote and click on “Current Ballot.”

Voters are required to present a form of acceptable photo identification when voting in person. Acceptable forms of photo ID include valid Virginia driver’s licenses, Virginia DMV-issued photo identification cards, U.S. Passports, employer-issued photo ID cards, student ID cards issued by an institution of higher education in Virginia, voter photo ID cards issued by the Virginia Department of Elections, and photo ID cards issued by Virginia, one of its political subdivisions, or the United States. If you are a registered Virginia voter but do not have an acceptable photo ID, free voter photo IDs are processed at all of Virginia’s 133 local general registrars’ offices. The Deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday, October 16. Voters are strongly encouraged to inquire about their voter registration status before the registration. To qualify to register to vote in Virginia, applicants must be citizens of the United States, residents of Virginia, and 18 years of age on or before the date of the election. Applicants must provide full name, date of birth, residence address, and Social Security number on the voter registration application and must not have been adjudicated a felon or mentally incapacitated, unless their voting rights have subsequently been restored by the appropriate authority.

Qualified residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia may apply for, or change their voter registration at the Department of Voter Registration and Elections, located in the 5th Street County Office Building at 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902. Office hours are 8:30am – 5pm, Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays. In addition, qualified residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia may apply for, or change their voter registration at the Department of Motor Vehicles - Pantops Customer Service Center, at 2055 Abbey Road, Charlottesville, 22911. DMV-Pantops office hours are 8am – 5pm, Monday through Friday, and 8am – 12pm on Saturday, excluding legal holidays.

In addition to the voter registration options above, qualified residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia may apply for or change their voter registration by mail. Applications can be obtained online from the Department of Elections at elections.virginia.gov, or in person from either the Voter Registration office or DMV-Pantops. Completed application forms may be mailed to Box 404, 536 Pantops Center, Charlottesville, VA 22911.

Absentee voting for the November 7 general elections began on Friday, September 22, 2017. Please note that absentee ballot applications are not received at DMV-Pantops, nor is absentee voting conducted at DMV-Pantops. Voters who are registered to vote in Albemarle County, and who are eligible to vote absentee, may do so either by mail or in person, except for certain first-time voters who registered by mail, and who must vote absentee in person. Applications to receive an absentee ballot by mail may be presented to the Albemarle County Department of Voter Registration and Elections/Electoral Board in one of four ways:

  • By mail: Box 404, 536 Pantops Center, Charlottesville, VA 22911,
  • By fax: (434) 972-4178,
  • By email: voteabsentee@albemarle.org, or
  • In-person: 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902

The deadline for receipt of a by-mail absentee ballot application for the November 7 general elections is Tuesday, October 31, 2017, 5pm.  For absentee voters who vote by mail, the completed voted absentee ballot must be received by the Department of Voter Registration and Elections by 7pm. on Election Day, November 7, 2017, in order to be counted. 

As an alternative to absentee voting by mail, qualified Albemarle County voters may vote an absentee ballot in-person at the Department of Voter Registration and Elections, 5th Street County Office Building, 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902, beginning Friday, September 22, 2017.  Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 5pm. In addition to regular weekday office hours, the office at 1600 5th Street will be open on Saturday, October 28, 2017, and Saturday, November 4, 2017, from 9am – 5pm. Saturday, November 4, 2017 at 5pm is the deadline for in-person absentee voting for the November 7 general election, except for certain limited emergency situations.
