7/15/2016

Albemarle County is proud to announce that today two Fire Rescue captains, Captain Phillip Burkett from Monticello Fire Station and Captain Meade Whitaker from Hollymead Fire Station, will graduate from the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association Fire Officer Academy.

The Virginia Fire Officer Academy is an interactive, challenging, educational initiative of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association (VFCA). It provides modern, ethical leadership values while promoting best practices in fire and emergency services health and safety. The academy offers fire and emergency service professionals a comprehensive certificate program designed to deliver the key skills and techniques of exemplary leadership necessary to enhance firefighter safety and to advance a culture of leadership through ownership and safety in today’s ever-changing fire and emergency services.

“Albemarle County is proud of Captain Burkett’s and Captain Whitaker’s achievement and their dedication to professional development, growth, and leadership,” said Dan Eggleston, Chief of Albemarle County Fire Rescue. “The Department is fortunate to have these committed professionals who are devoting their careers to public service and the betterment of our community.”

The academy involves a 6-day program with a focus on providing a developmental opportunity for those recently promoted to, or with the potential to be promoted to, the ranks of Battalion Chief, Division Chief, District Chief, etc. The program was held at the campus of the University of Richmond and participants resided on the campus for the duration of the event, which will culminate with a graduation this afternoon.
