Swimming Safety Tips
6/1/2015

The sun is high. The water is warm. School is almost out and vacation is near. Albemarle County Fire Rescue wants to remind you of the following tips to stay safe around water:

  1. Buddy up! Never swim alone.
  2. Swim in designated areas and always know where the lifeguard is.
  3. Know your limits. Don’t swim farther than you are able to.
  4. Jump in water feet first.
  5. Never leave a young child unattended near water. They should be within arm’s reach of an adult.
  6. Swimming aids (pool noodles or tubes) are not a substitution for U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets. Life jackets should always be worn when boating.
  7. Don’t swim during storms.
  8. Install and use barriers around your home pool or hot tub; at least 4 feet high fence with selflatching gate.
  9. Stay hydrated and wear sunscreen with at least SPF 15
  10. AVOID alcohol use. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance and coordination.
