ACPD Announces Operation Safe Shopper

During the holiday shopping season, the Albemarle County Police Department will be increasing patrols at shopping centers for Operation Safe Shopper. This grant-funded community safety initiative will begin on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27th and will conclude on Friday, December 26th.

With an increase in the number of shoppers comes the potential for an increase in crime and victimization. This includes the potential for theft from vehicles, purse snatching, vandalism, assault & battery and shoplifting. The Albemarle County Police Department is committed to providing an increased police presence and proactive patrols to combat this criminal activity. We want our shoppers and citizens to feel safe in Albemarle County. In addition to our increased patrols, we ask that you do your part to deter criminal activity.

Please follow the personal safety suggestions provided.

  • Lock your car doors
  • Keep items (gifts and packages) hidden from plain view in your car
  • Keep personal items (wallet, handbag, purse) secure at all times
  • Be aware of your surrounds
  • Park near street lights or a lighting source
  • Do not text or talk on your phone while walking in parking lots
  • Walk with confidence and use body language to let people know you are aware of their presence
  • Have your keys in your hand before you reach your vehicle
  • Always trust your instincts. Remove yourself immediately from situations that make you feel uncomfortable.
