Info on Traffic Maintenance during Rt. 29 / Rio Rd. Interchange Construction
10/30/2014

The County is anxious to share accurate and up-to-date information from the Virginia Department of Transportation regarding how traffic will be maintained during construction of the Route 29 Solutions Projects, particularly the Route 29/Rio Road grade separated interchange.

HIGHLIGHTS:

The Rio Rd. / Rt. 29 intersection may be restricted for 103 days from either May 23 - September 2, 2016, or from May 22 - September 1, 2017, but not both periods.

Between May 23 - September 2:

  • Rio can be closed to east - west through traffic across Rt. 29.
  • Rio can be closed to left turns from Rio to Rt. 29, and from Rt. 29 to Rio.
  • Three northbound lanes and two southbound lanes will be maintained on Rt. 29 from 6 am to 9 pm.
  • Right turns from Rt. 29 to Rio and from Rio to Rt. 29 will be permitted.

Before May 23 and after September 2:

  • Four through lanes in each direction on Rt. 29 will be maintained from 6 am to 9 pm.
  • Two through lanes in each direction on Rio Road will be maintained from 6 am to 9 pm.
  • All roadway connections and all existing operational movements (left and right turns) will be maintained from 6 am to 9 pm.

A temporary signalized crossover at existing Berkmar and Rt. 29 will provide access to and from Rt. 29 during construction. This crossover can be used to detour around Rio for northbound and southbound traffic, and can be used to access the east side of Rt. 29 by southbound Berkmar traffic.

We encourage all citizens to review this information, and to continue to check in at the VDOT Route 29 Solutions website for complete and factual information on all the Route 29 Solutions Projects.
