Albemarle County Encourages All to Prepare for the Effects of Hurricane Sandy
10/26/2012

We all need to keep an eye on Hurricane Sandy for the next few days and plan for the possibility of local impacts.  While the exact track of the storm and the magnitude of impacts is still uncertain, the situation  could include heavy rains, flooding, high winds, downed trees and power outages for our area. Because the weather forecasters are still very uncertain about what this storm will do, we encourage you to stay alert and tuned into local media reports about the progress of the storm. Regardless of how this particular incident plays out, it is always a good idea to take a moment to assess your personal preparedness for a weather emergency:

Before the Storm
Inventory your emergency kit.  Check to be sure flashlights are operable and all your batteries, foodstuffs, first aid kits and documents are relevant and in date.  If you do not yet have a kit, get one!   Whether at home or traveling, have a plan, become familiar with evacuation routes and be ready to execute your plan if a warning or evacuation is announced.

During the Storm
When a warning is called, stay informed of the latest developments and instructions.  Stay inside in a safe location during the storm; it will be very hazardous outside and is not worth the risk. If ordered to evacuate, do so if at all possible. Evacuation orders are not given lightly and those in authority making that call are doing so based on the best and most current information available.

After the Storm
After the storm, make sure it is all clear outside before you go out. Report any power lines that are down and stay away from them. Lastly, be patient…it may take some time before things are back to normal. If roads are flooded, do not drive through the water. Turn around and find another way.
