County Police Participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative
9/27/2012

The Albemarle County Police Department is taking part in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative.  This is an opportunity to safely dispose of expired, unwanted or unused prescription drugs.  The Albemarle County Police Department on 5th Street will serve as a drop off location.  You can stop by on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Controlled, non-controlled and over the counter substances can be collected.  The program is anonymous and the identity of the individuals and the drugs collected will not be released.  A law enforcement officer will be with the distribution boxes at all times.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sponsors the Take Back Initiative and in April, citizens turned in a record-breaking 552,161 pounds (276 tons) of unwanted or expired medications at the 5,659 take-back sites that were available in all 50 states and U.S. territories.  In Virginia, 16,899.2 pounds were collected.  In Albemarle County, we collected 330.3 pounds at the police department and 331.0 pounds at the Martha Jefferson Hospital Outpatient Care Center.

Please help us spread the word about this safety opportunity for our community.
