FEMA Denies Individual Earthquake Assistance for Albemarle County Residents; Limited Time for Appeal
1/9/2012

Albemarle County was denied FEMA individual assistance for the August 2011 earthquake.  There is a limited time to appeal this decision.  If you have earthquake damage to your home, it is important for you to contact the local Office of Emergency Management immediately.

In order to have the best opportunity for success in an appeal, we must prove that there are several homes with significant damage.  Of particular interest are homes with damage to foundations, other significant structural damage, obvious substantial cracking of interior walls, and damage to chimneys; especially if the chimney is the primary source of heat.  Clusters of homes in a relatively small geographical area that have sustained damages are also of special interest.

Damages must be verified by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and potentially FEMA if there are enough homes damaged to warrant their return to this area.  The first step in this process is to contact Marge Thomas, Emergency Management Coordinator, at 434-971-1263 or mthomas@albemarle.org.
