Albemarle Goes Gold in VML/VACO Green Government Challenge
10/31/2011

Albemarle County recently received a gold level certification in the 2011 Go Green VA Challenge, which is part of the Virginia Association of Counties (VACO) and the Virginia Municipal League’s larger Go Green Virginia environmental initiative that kicked off in late 2007.

The Go Green Challenge is a friendly competition designed to encourage implementation of specific environmental policies and actions that that encourage environmental stewardship by both the local government and the broader community.  Cities, towns and counties can become a certified "Green Government."

“We are very pleased to receive this recognition of our continuing efforts in environmental stewardship and we appreciate our staff and the community’s efforts that made this certification possible,” said County Executive Tom Foley.

Local governments earned “green points” by implementing or adopting up to 30 policies and actions divided into 11 categories ranging from energy efficiency and green buildings to land-use and innovation.  Albemarle County received a total of 170 “green” points out of a possible 200 total points and this is second straight year for Albemarle to score “Gold” certification.  Albemarle received points for supporting the Local Energy Alliance Program (LEAP) for county residents and the Better Business Challenge for local businesses.

LEAP and the Better Business Challenge are integral parts of the County’s green government efforts. LEAP provides local residents and property owners with information on creating a healthier, more comfortable and affordable home or building.  The mission of the Charlottesville Area Better Business Challenge is to increase efficiency and improve business operations while raising environmental awareness through a variety of outreach efforts.

Albemarle County is currently implementing a countywide Environmental Management System and participates in public outreach programs through the Rivanna Regional Stormwater Education Partnership (RRSEP).
