Albemarle County Police Department Announces Promotions

The Albemarle County Police Department is pleased to announce the following promotions:

Lieutenant Shawn Schwertfeger has been promoted to the rank of Captain and will be serving as the Commander of the Operations Bureau.  Under this Bureau he will be responsible for the three Patrol Divisions and the Community Support Division as well as many specialty teams to include the Tactical Unit.  He leaves his current duties as our agency's Public Information Officer and Commander of the Administrative Division.  Captain Schwertfeger began his career with the agency in 1991 and has had experience in supervising the Patrol Divisions, the Community Support Division and the Investigations Division.  He possesses a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from West Liberty University in West Virginia.

Sergeant Peter Mainzer has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.  His new assignment has not yet been determined.  He currently serves as the Sergeant of the Office of Professional Standards.  This Office is responsible for internal investigations as well as department inspections and audits.  Lieutenant Mainzer began his career with the agency in 1986 and has experience in supervising the Traffic Unit, the Neighborhood Resource Unit, the Animal Control Unit, and Daylight Patrol.  He is also a former Tactical Team Supervisor.  Lieutenant Mainzer served three years with the United States Army as a Military Police Officer.

These promotions will be effective tomorrow, January 25, 2011.

In addition, Sergeant Robert Beck was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on December 30, 2010 and was assigned to the Midnight Patrol Division.  He was previously assigned to the Evening Patrol Division as a Sergeant. Lieutenant Beck began his career with the agency in 1996 and has experience in supervising the Training and Professional Development Unit, the Office of Professional Standards, Investigations, and Evening Patrol.  He possesses a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University.
