Weather Delays Postpone Photosafe Start Date Until the Week of October 25
10/7/2010

Construction delayed due to rain; System to become operational during the week of October 25 with a 30-day warning period

Due to recent heavy rains, construction has been delayed on the camera installation for the County’s PhotoSafe program. Construction at the intersection of Route 29 North and Rio Road will begin on October 11 and the system is expected to become operational during the week of October 25. There will be a 30 day warning period during which time enforcement notices will be mailed to violators but no fine will be assessed so that people have time to become aware of the PhotoSafe program.  The system is expected to go live with actual enforcement and fines beginning on November 25.

Highlights of the PhotoSafe Program:

  • only vehicles that enter the intersection after the light turns red will trigger the camera system
  • no photos will be taken of the inside of the vehicle or of any vehicle occupants
  • there is a $50.00 civil fine for each photo enforced red light running violation
  • the operator of the vehicle is liable for the fine
  • violators have an opportunity to view their violation online

Complete information about PhotoSafe, including a program overview, Frequently Asked Questions and a 90 second animated video which shows the system in action, is available on the County website at www.albemarle.org/photosafe.
