November Election Information

A General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, for the office of: Member of the United States House of Representatives, Virginia 5th District.  The names of the candidates for this office will appear on the ballots in all Albemarle County voting precincts.  Also on the ballot will be three proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution. To see the choices that will be on the ballot on November 2, go to the Voter Registration homepage at the Albemarle County website and click on “Current Ballot”

The Deadline to register to vote in this election is Tuesday, October 12, at 5 pm. Voters are strongly encouraged to inquire before the registration deadline if they wish to check their voter registration status.  Absentee voting for the November 2 general election begins on Friday, September 17, 2010.

Qualified residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia may apply for, or change their voter registration at the Department of Voter Registration and Elections, located in the 5th Street County Office Building at 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.  Office hours are from 8:30 a.m. through 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding legal holidays. In addition, qualified residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia may apply for, or change their voter registration at the Department of Motor Vehicles - Pantops Customer Service Center, at 2055 Abbey Road,Charlottesville, 22911.  DMV-Pantops office hours are from 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 8:00 a.m. through 12 Noon on Saturday, excluding holidays. 

In addition to the voter registration options above, qualified residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia may apply for, or change their voter registration, by mail.  Voter registration application forms may be obtained online from the State Board of Elections, at http://www.sbe.virginia.gov, or from the Voter Registration office at 1600 5th Street, or at the DMV-Pantops.  Completed application forms may be mailed to: Box 404, 536 Pantops Center, Charlottesville, VA 22911. 

Please note that due to staffing cut-backs, the Voter Registration Desk at the DMV office on Pantops will not be staffed full-time for the foreseeable future.  However, regular DMV customer service employees at DMV- Pantops are authorized receive voter registration applications, at the DMV teller booths, during regular DMV office hours. 

Please note also that absentee ballot applications are NOT received at DMV –Pantops, and absentee voting is NOT conducted at DMV-Pantops.
Voters who are registered to vote in Albemarle County, and who are eligible to vote absentee, may do so either by mail or in person. Applications to receive an absentee ballot by mail must be presented to the Albemarle County Department of Voter Registration and Elections/Electoral Board, via mail (Box 404, 536 Pantops Center, Charlottesville, VA 22911), or via fax (434) 972-4178, or in person, at 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902.  The deadline for receipt of a by-mail absentee ballot application for the November 2 general election is Tuesday, October 26, 2010, 5 p.m.  For absentee voters who vote by mail, the completed voted absentee ballot must be received by this office by 7 p.m. on Election Day, November 2, 2010, in order to be counted.  

As an alternative to absentee voting by mail, qualified Albemarle County voters may vote an absentee ballot in-person at the Department of Voter Registration and Elections, 5th Street County Office Building, 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville, VA 22902, beginning Friday, September 17, 2010.  Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. through 5 p.m.  For in-person absentee voting, in addition to regular weekday office hours, the office at 1600 5th Street will be open on Saturday, October 23, 2010 and Saturday, October 30, 2010, from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m.   Saturday, October 30, 2010 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for in-person absentee voting for the November 2 general election, except for certain limited emergency situations.
