Albemarle County is continuing to invest in student safety with two traffic enforcement programs: school zone speed cameras and school bus stop arm cameras. These tools are designed to encourage safer driving behaviors and protect students as they travel to and from school. The County has partnered with U.S.-based public safety technology company Altumint to implement these programs.
School Zone Speed Cameras
Beginning Wednesday, August 13, 2025, Albemarle County will operate automated speed enforcement cameras in two school zones: on the Lambs Lane campus (Albemarle High, Journey Middle, and Greer Elementary) and on Rockfish Gap Turnpike/U.S. 250 in Crozet (Western Albemarle, Henley Middle, and Brownsville Elementary). The cameras will issue citations to drivers traveling 10 mph or more over the posted school zone limit during times when children are traveling to and from school and the flashing school zone lights are activated.
To ensure a smooth transition at the new Rockfish Gap location, there will be a 30-day warning period during which only warning notices will be issued to motorists on Rockfish Gap Turnpike. Full enforcement at the Rockfish Gap location will begin on Monday, September 15, 2025, with $100 citations.
The warning period does not apply to the Lambs Lane location, which launched in 2024. Full enforcement will resume at this campus on the first day of school.
School Bus Stop Arm Cameras
Albemarle County will also use stop arm cameras on select school buses to address drivers illegally passing stopped school buses. Four buses have been selected to start the 2025-26 school year based on routes with frequent stop arm violations. The results of these initial four buses will be closely monitored, and additional systems may be added during the school year based on supporting data.
These cameras automatically detect and record violations when a vehicle passes a bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. For the first 30 days (August 13-September 12, 2025), the cameras will issue warning notices only to motorists. After that time, violations will be $250.
