Albemarle County invests in student safety with two traffic enforcement programs: school zone speed cameras and school bus stop arm cameras. These tools are designed to encourage safer driving behaviors and protect students as they travel to and from school. The County has partnered with U.S.-based public safety technology company Altumint to implement these programs.

School Zone Speed Cameras

Albemarle County operates automated speed enforcement cameras in two school zones: on the Lambs Lane campus (Albemarle High, Journey Middle, and Greer Elementary) and on Rockfish Gap Turnpike/U.S. 250 in Crozet (Western Albemarle, Henley Middle, and Brownsville Elementary). The cameras issue $100 citations to drivers traveling 10 mph or more over the posted school zone limit during times when children are traveling to and from school and the flashing school zone lights are activated.

School Bus Stop Arm Cameras

Albemarle County uses stop arm cameras on select school buses to address drivers illegally passing stopped school buses. Four buses were selected to start the 2025-26 school year based on routes with frequent stop arm violations. The results of these initial four buses will be closely monitored, and additional systems may be added based on supporting data.

These cameras automatically detect and record violations when a vehicle passes a bus with its stop arm extended and red lights flashing. Violations are $250.
