Albemarle County, VA
Home MenuStream & Wetland Restoration
Many streams in Albemarle County experience serious erosion and sedimentation, harming the habitat and health of aquatic organisms, and in some cases putting infrastructure at risk. Since 2012, the County has used restoration techniques at selected sites to help reduce erosion of streambanks, increase storage and infiltration of floodwaters in floodplains, and ultimately reduce the smothering of habitat by excessive silt, sand, and clay.
Stream and wetland restoration also helps meet water quality improvement goals for local waterways and the Chesapeake Bay. Restoration projects have contributed a large portion of the phosphorus, nitrogen, and sediment pollution reductions for which Albemarle County is responsible. Long-term maintenance of these restoration sites includes invasive species management, adding more native plants, and occasional structural repairs.
