Before applying online for a mailed ballot, check your voter registration status to make sure it is up-to-date.

Apply for a mailed ballot online by accessing your Virginia Voter Record. You will need the following to complete this request:

• Social Security Number
• Virginia Driver's License

The online application process uses your digital signature from DMV records, that is why the Social Security Number and Driver's License number are required. For additional information, please visit the Virginia Department of Elections website or call us at 434-972-4173.

You can see your mailed ballot's progress, from the time your ballot application is received, check its progress through the United States Postal Service, to when it is checked back in at the Albemarle Elections office.

1- Enter to the Department of Elections Citizen Portal to see your absentee application status

2- Track your ballot's progress through the USPS system by using the Ballot Scout application

3- Check the Citizen Portal to see when your ballot is processed back in at the Albemarle County Elections office.

Special Election, April 21, 2026 

 Early In-Person Voting: Friday, March 6, 2026 - Saturday, April 18, 2026

• Voter Registration Deadline: April 14, 2026
• Same Day Registration: After April 14 through Election Day 
• Last day to request a ballot by-mail: Requests must be received by 5:00 PM April 10, 2026

Mailing your ballot through the United States Postal Service:

• Use the pre-addressed, postage-paid, return envelope that was sent with your ballot
• Mailed ballots must be postmarked no later than Election Day and received by the registrar's office not later than noon on the Friday after the election.

Returning with a commercial delivery service (like FedEx or UPS):

• Same deadlines apply as for ballots mailed by the US Post Office.

Hand-delivering your ballot:

• Bring it to the Registrar's office at the 5th Street County office building, 1600 5th Street, Charlottesville VA 22902.
• There will be a drop box located in front of the main entrance, available round the clock beginning 45 days prior to Election Day, and through 7 pm on Election Day.
• Please use the postage-paid return envelope, even if you are putting it in the drop box! It makes it easier for us to check your ballot back in.
• Voters may drop off their own ballot, or the ballot for another voter.
• Hand-delivered ballots must be received by 7 pm on Election Day.

Upcoming Election: April 21, 2026 Special Election 

What:

For the Special Election scheduled on April 21, 2026, there is only one question on the ballot.  The State has issued the following explanation for the proposed amendment to the Virginia Constitution.
