Albemarle County recently partnered with Emergency Services Consulting International (ESCI) to conduct independent, data-driven staffing studies for our Police Department and Fire Rescue. These studies provide an in-depth look at current staffing levels and evaluate how effectively the County can meet community needs today and in the future. This work is one step in ensuring Albemarle County is well-prepared to deliver high-quality public safety services for years to come.

Both departments have already taken steps to implement recommendations from the studies. For example, a dedicated Human Resources manager has been hired to strengthen and institutionalize dedicated public safety HR support, and the police department has added a third commander to the patrol division to provide 24-hour command coverage during the week.

The findings serve as a roadmap for the next several years, giving the County valuable data and recommendations that will inform future planning. The County will use the studies as a resource for ongoing conversations with public safety leadership, employees, and community members to make thoughtful, data-driven changes now while continuing to plan for long-term needs.
