Best Management Practices

While they are not generally required by law, implementing best management practices (BMPs) can have positive and significant impacts on stream health.  Depending on the land use and characteristics of the property, many cost-share opportunities exist to help support landowners with BMP cost and installation.

Retain or plant forest in riparian buffers

buffer planting4 Forested riparian buffers provide more benefits and ecosystem services than grass buffers.  Forests are more adept at strengthening stream banks and preventing erosion.  Roots, downed trees, and detritus slow stormwater flow and trap sediment.  Because sediment carries chemical pollutants, forests are one of the most effective ways to minimize pollution reaching the waterways. Forest canopies moderate water temperature and woody material provides habitat and food for both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife. Keeping land forested also improves air quality and increases the carbon storage capacity of the landscape.

Maintain buffers at the greatest width possible

Wider riparian buffers deliver greater benefits and ecosystem services.  Buffer width typically depends on the characteristics of the property, including adjacent land use, slope, soil type, and other factors.  The width of the riparian buffer may also depend on its desired function – narrower buffers may be adequate for bank stabilization and stream shading, while wider buffers are required for filtering nutrients and providing wildlife habitat.

Exclude livestock from streams
cows_fencing_buffer

Livestock with open access to waterways will trample and erode stream bottoms, banks, and vegetation, increasing sediment erosion, nutrient runoff, and water temperature.  Concentrated animal waste contributes directly to nutrient pollution and high bacteria counts.  Livestock exclusion practices that include fencing, alternative water sources, and establishment of vegetated buffers provide extensive benefits to livestock wellbeing, productivity, stream health, and the integrity of adjacent farmland.

Additional BMPs

There are many other BMPs for different land uses that can positively impact stream health.   Visit these resources to learn more:
