Purpose of the Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals, referred to as the BZA, hears and decides appeals of any decisions of the zoning administrator or their representative, grants certain variances and special use permits, and interprets the zoning district map in cases of district boundary uncertainties. The Board is established by the Code of Virginia, Section 15.2-2308, and their powers and duties are outlined in the Code of Virginia, Section 15.2-2309. Its five members are appointed by the Judge of the Circuit Court, and serve for five year terms. The Board operates under these Rules of Procedure.

BZA Meetings

BZA Meetings are held in person on the first Tuesday of each month at 2 pm in Lane Auditorium of the Albemarle County Office Building at 401 McIntire Road when there are cases scheduled to be considered.  Please refer to the schedule as meetings are subject to change or cancellation based on case scheduling.
