This stormwater retrofit project is intended to reconcile competing County objectives to:

  1. incentivize a dense, urban district in downtown Crozet and
  2. provide exceptional protection to downstream drinking water supplies and aquatic resources through a regional stormwater management solution.

The project will mitigate stormwater impacts from existing hardened surfaces and efficiently facilitate future density by providing stormwater management – both water quality and channel/flood protection – for properties with a proposed service district. 

Although water quality management for this area of Crozet is theoretically provided by the Lickinghole Basin, no protection is provided to the approximately 40 miles of streams and other waters located upstream of the Basin (figure on right).  This project addresses this shortcoming by managing runoff from the most densely-developed portion of the Basin’s watershed close to its source.
