The primary functions of the Public Works Division center around the various maintenance responsibilities associated with the upkeep of County owned facilities. These responsibilities fall under:
The facility maintenance staff is responsible for the upkeep of six occupied County owned buildings totaling over 450,000 square feet. Additionally, they have caretaker responsibility for the old jail and jailer’s house. These buildings range in age from our historic early 19th century courthouse to our newest Northside Library that opened in 2015. In addition to handling the day to day operations of the buildings ensuring building systems are operating properly and responding to customer service requests, the staff is actively involved with contractor oversight for small renovation projects such as the remodeling of restrooms and offices and the upkeep of the County pool vehicles.
The custodial maintenance staff is responsible for the cleaning of three County buildings encompassing over 374,000 square feet. Though the preponderance of their work is accomplished after hours, day time coverage is provided to respond to customer needs during working hours.
The grounds maintenance staff is responsible for maintaining over 130 acres of County owned property and rights-of-way, overseeing mowing and landscaping contractors, and managing small projects. In addition to grass cutting and landscaping, the staff, in coordination with the Water Resources Division, ensures the County’s storm water management facilities function properly. The staff is also tasked with installing and maintaining the County’s E911 road signs.
