Mission Statement:
To be responsible for management of the County’s finances guided by the fiscal policies adopted by the Board of Supervisors while promoting excellence, quality, and efficiency of operations by enhancing the ability of our employees to serve our internal and external customers in an outstanding manner.

What We Do:
The Department of Finance is responsible for the County’s overall financial management including: financial reporting, assessment and collection of all local revenues, cash management, debt management, risk management, and financial systems management functions.  Finance provides services to the public and local government entities, including Albemarle County Joint Entities, and Public Schools.  Services provided include:  payroll; accounts payable; procurement; capital financing; general accounting, quarterly and annual financial reporting; economic vitality monitoring and reporting; and, revenue forecasting for County budgeting purposes.


The Finance Department is comprised of the following 4 major divisions, each with important responsibilities to support the overall financial health of the County and all of the stakeholders it serves, from residents and visitors to businesses, both large and small.

Revenue Administration is responsible for the assessment of personal property (individual and business), business license, machinery and tools, food and beverage, transient occupancy, public service, bank franchise, and utility taxes; issuing tax bills, collecting of all taxes and revenue due to the County, pursuing delinquent tax accounts, and administering the tax relief for the elderly and disabled program. 

Real Estate is responsible for valuation of real estate, the land use program, and the veterans’ exemption program.  

Financial Management is responsible for purchasing, treasury, accounting, and payroll functions. 

Administration serves the citizens of the County as a public fiduciary safeguarding the County's assets. It oversees and ensures that all divisions carry out their duties in an efficient and courteous manner. Administration also manages the County's property and liability insurance coverages, revenue forecasting, and the flexible spending plan (Beneplus) for both local government and schools.
