Got a real Christmas tree ready for its next chapter? Parks and Recreation is hosting eight tree drop-off sites now through January 18. Sites are open daily from 7 a.m. until dark. Please remove all lights, decorations, stands, and nails before dropping off your tree—no yard waste or wreaths, please. Albemarle County is nearing universal broadband access, with 99.9% of locations expected to be connected by the end of this fiscal year. Albemarle County Parks & Recreation Director Bob Crickenberger will retire on December 31, wrapping up an incredible 51-year career dedicated to building parks, programs, and places that bring the community together. Starting as a park groundskeeper and rising to director, Crickenberger helped grow the park system to thousands of acres, miles of trails, and programs serving more than 30,000 participants each year.ACPD Accreditation
The Albemarle County Police Department has officially earned accreditation from the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission — a big milestone that highlights their commitment to professionalism, accountability, and community-focused policing. Chris Greene Lake Park will be closed December 8 through the 12 for paving and construction on the main road and parking areas, creating smoother, safer surfaces for everyone. Registration is officially open through December 15—or until spots fill up—for Albemarle County Parks and Recreation’s adult basketball league! VDOT Public Meeting – May 8
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is hosting a Citizen Information Meeting on May 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Monticello High School.
The meeting will cover proposed improvements to Avon Street, between Druid Avenue and Avon Court. Stop by to view project materials, ask questions, and speak with the project team.
Housing Voucher Waitlists Open – May 9–16
The Albemarle County Office of Housing is opening waitlists for 1- and 2-bedroom units at Hickory Hope in Southwood. Each list is limited to 50 spots, and the application period runs from May 9 through May 16.

Sweeping Beauty Hits the Streets
Have you seen Sweeping Beauty on the roads? Since March 10, Albemarle’s street sweeper has cleared over 50 tons of dirt and debris from local streets.

Cleaning Supplies & Hygiene Drive
Throughout April, the County’s Family Support Team is collecting hygiene and cleaning supplies to help local families in need. These items are essential to maintaining safe, healthy homes—but they can be difficult to afford.
Donation bins are available at the County Buildings at McIntire and 5th Street, the Food Lion in Forest Lakes, and the Kroger at Barracks Road.
Biscuit Run Park: Visitor Safety
Biscuit Run Park is seeing more visitors as the weather warms up—but construction is still underway in some areas. Please follow posted signs and avoid closed trails to stay safe and protect the work in progress.
Projects include stream restoration, new trails, and a downhill bike and skills area. You can track the stream restoration progress at Chronolog stations throughout the park.
Crozet Square Improvements
Construction is in progress on the Crozet Square Improvements Project, which will bring pedestrian upgrades and infrastructure improvements to downtown Crozet.
All businesses remain open and accessible during construction—so it’s a great time to Shop the Square and support your favorite local spots.

GO Virginia Grant Supports Rivanna Futures
Albemarle County has been awarded a $613,570 GO Virginia grant to help advance Rivanna Futures, a planned hub for national security, defense, and innovation. This grant accelerates site development, laying the groundwork for future economic growth and job creation in the region.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month
If you see pinwheels around the County this month, they’re part of a national campaign to raise awareness during Child Abuse Prevention Month. The pinwheel is a symbol of the safe, healthy childhood every child deserves.
Albemarle County’s Child Protective Services team believes in the power of community to support families and prevent abuse.

ACPD Annual Report Highlights
New speed cameras installed near Albemarle High School led to a 49% decrease in speeding between September and December 2024. This is one of several milestones highlighted in the Albemarle County Police Department’s 2024 Annual Report, which also includes:

Foster Parents Needed – Info Session April 10
There is a critical need for foster parents in our region, especially for older youth and teens. Community Attention Foster Families (CAFF) will host a virtual information session on April 10 to share more about what’s involved and how you can help.
