Sergeant Ryan Sheridan and K-9 partner Dembe of the Albemarle County Police Department were recognized on Friday, July 24, as one of three national finalists for the NACS Foundation's First Responder of the Year Award during the organization's annual 24/7 Day celebration at The Market at Mill Creek.
Sgt. Sheridan and K-9 Dembe were selected following a review of nominations by a committee of industry representatives, NACS Foundation staff, and community partners. The 2026 nomination process was highly competitive, with 570 first responders from around the country being considered.
Throughout 2025, Sgt. Sheridan and K-9 Dembe demonstrated extraordinary dedication and professionalism, contributing to several high-profile arrests and consistently supporting critical operations across the county. Sergeant Sheridan responded to 373 calls for service—many involving urgent support to patrol units—and regularly made himself available for callouts, often stepping in without being asked. Their efforts led to the arrest of nine violent individuals and resulted in significant drug seizures that disrupted criminal activity in Albemarle County.

“Sergeant Sheridan and K-9 Dembe exemplify the professionalism, courage, and commitment to service that define the Albemarle County Police Department. Together, they have made a tremendous impact on the safety of our community, and we couldn’t be more proud to see their dedication recognized among the nation’s very best,” said Major Randy Jamerson, Deputy Chief of Police for ACPD.
The award times with 24/7 Day, taking place July 24, which recognizes the unique relationship between first responders and convenience stores both during day-to-day operations as the responders use c-stores to connect, caffeinate and re-charge, as well as during times of disaster.
“We’re honored to celebrate Sergeant Sheridan and Dembe as local heroes in our community. Their impact in our community is intangible, and this celebration is only a small way we can say thank you for their efforts. We’re appreciative of NACS facilitating this award so we can recognize our local heroes on a national platform,” said Maurice Lamarche, VP of Retail Operations for The Markets by Tiger.
