To the men and women of Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD), we thank you, as the Board of Supervisors has recognized May 10-16, 2026 as Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day. You can read the full proclamation here >>> https://albemarle.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=15422647&GUID=3D5CB2DC-6A44-496F-A4D0-E69CE52B039D.
National Police Week began in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy identified May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week it falls as National Police Week, "to pay tribute to the law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and to voice our appreciation for all those who currently serve on the front lines of the battle against crime."
This week, we reflect on the ultimate sacrifice officers have made in the line of service and recognize the men and women of the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) and the sacrifices they make to protect and serve our community.
Albemarle County honors the officers who have fallen in the line of duty and we value the courage and devotion of our police officers in their service to maintain our community’s safety and security – and we invite our community, businesses, and visitors to recognize their service.
