A monthly communications report from the Albemarle County School Board to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors

 

Community Public Charter School Update: On November 30, 2006, the School Division received a Charter School application to provide arts-infused instruction to 36 6th graders in the Burley Middle School building, beginning August 2008.  The applicants have received a $450,000 federal grant to plan for this Charter School.  After a multi-layered process of review and revision, the School Board approved the Community Public Charter School contract at its July 12th meeting.

 

Science Curriculum: The School Board approved the Divisionís Science Vertical Team request for conceptual approval of the Science Curriculum Framework to begin implementation in 2007 -08 with the understanding that the team, with input from teachers across the Division, will continue to revise the document throughout the 2007-2008 school year. In the Spring of 2008, a request to fully adopt the new curriculum framework will be presented to the School Board.

 

School Board/Superintendent Priorities: The School Board completed two of its three evaluation processes, evaluation of School Board and individual School Board members and evaluation of the Superintendentís performance.  The third and final component of the evaluation process which focuses on the evaluation of the School Boardís Biennial Priorities began at the School Board Retreat on June 29th.  Discussion of the priorities continued during the July 12th School Board meeting where focus was around 21st Century workforce needs, the evolving global economy, and the current state of public education.  The Board will continue working on setting its priorities in August. 

 

August Meetings:  The School Board will hold its regular meetings on August 9 and 23, 2007.  A meeting with local legislators will take place on August 31st.  In addition a student conduct meeting is tentatively scheduled for August 27th.
