A monthly communications report from the Albemarle County School Board to the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors

Charter School Review Committee: The School Board is seeking applicants to serve on a Charter School Review Committee.  Members of the Committee will review charter school applications, conduct applicant interviews, and make recommendations to the School Board.  There are five non-staff positions open to the public: three community members, one local business representative, and one qualified educator with specific knowledge of charter schools.  Applicants must reside in Albemarle County.  Those interested in serving on the committee are asked to submit a letter of interest (no more than two pages) and a one-page resume.  Deadline for applications was extended to December 8, 2006.

School Division 2007/08 Funding Request: During our November 9th meeting, the Board directed the Superintendent to prepare a funding request that reflects a reasonable estimation of what projected revenues will be in April, with reduction strategies if funding above the projection does not materialize.  The request would also include a prioritized list of unfunded needs.

School Division CIP: During our work session on October 26, the Board identified areas in the CIP that we would like to review further with staff.  In addition, there were more questions regarding the CIP raised during the November 9th meeting.  The School met in a special work session on November 29th to discuss the areas that the Board had identified.

Piedmont Virginia Business-Education Alliance:  In September 2006, the Charlottesville Area School Business Alliance (CASBA) dissolved the organization.  Following the dissolution of CASBA, area school divisions explored opportunities to continue forming partnerships between businesses, the community, and schools.  Following the dissolution of CASBA, the Piedmont Virginia Business Education Alliance was formed.  The Alliance was formed to provide for a continuation of some of the services previously provided by CASBA. The Alliance is an extension of the Career and Technical Education Initiative at PVCC.  Funding for this alliance will come from the school divisions that are involved in the Alliance.  Payment will be based on the number of students within each division.  The School Board approved that the Superintendent sign this MOU during its November 9th meeting.

Virginia School Boards Association Annual Conference: All seven School Board members, the Superintendent, and the School Board Clerk attended the Virginia School Boards’ Association Annual Convention in Williamsburg November 15th – 17th.  Held each fall, this is the largest gathering of school board members in the state. This conference offers general session speakers, seminars, regional meetings and the annual business meeting of the Association's Delegate Assembly.

School Board Meetings:  The next regularly scheduled School Board Meetings are December 7 and 14.  The next Closed School Board Meeting is scheduled for December 18th at 5:30 p.m. (time is tentative).
