ACTION: X INFORMATION:
The State Compensation Board has approved an additional support staff position for the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. This request is before the Board of Supervisors to 1) approve and establish the position and 2) if approved, appropriate the necessary funding.
To enhance the well-being and quality of life for all citizens through the provision of the highest level of public service consistent with the prudent use of public funds.
The workload of the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office has increased significantly. The existing paralegals are called upon increasingly to assist with reception duties because of the increased volume of telephone calls, walk-in citizens, and requests from defense attorneys, police officers and probation officers. The paralegals are relied on heavily to relieve the out-of-court and sometimes in-court workload for the attorneys and cannot function to full capacity in being timely and accurate with the added disruptions. This additional position is the most cost-effective way of dealing with this issue.
The Compensation Board has approved funding for this position, including salary and benefit costs. The start-up costs for this position will be funded by revenues from seized asset forfeiture funds; however, there will be a recurring County cost of $949 associated with operating costs for this position. Staff recommends approval of this position and the attached appropriation.
