Albemarle Ranked Ninth in the Nation for Use of Information Technology in Delivering Services

For the fourth year in a row, Albemarle County has been named among the top ten most technologically advanced, cutting edge county governments in the U.S. by the Center for Digital Government and the National Association of Counties (NACo) in their 2006 Digital Counties Survey.


Albemarle County ranks ninth in the nation in utilizing information technology (IT) to deliver high quality service to its customers and citizens based on a population category of 150,000 or less, according to the survey.   Albemarle is among only five Virginia jurisdictions ranked in the top ten for the four population categories, and the only Virginia county to be ranked in the top ten in the 150,000 and less population category. 

"We are delighted to be included in the elite communities across the country that are receiving national recognition for providing quality information technology services to their citizens," said County Executive Bob Tucker in response to the county's ranking.  "We are continuously adding new features to  help  our  users find out information and do business with the county quickly and conveniently, which is reflected in our survey ranking."

All counties in the United States were invited to participate in the survey.  The Digital Counties Survey grouped counties into four categories based on population: 500,000 or more; 250,000-499,999; 150,000-249,999; and less than 150,000.

"In today's world, technology is essential for effective and efficient government," said NACo Executive Director Larry Naake in announcing the awards.  "County governments realize this and are using technology in new ways to improve the delivery of service to their citizens.  These awards reflect the innovation being pursued by counties across the country."

In recognition of their achievements, the top-ranked counties will be honored at NACo's annual conference and exposition this month in Chicago, Illinois.
