Interested citizens in the Rio and Samuel Miller magisterial districts are invited to submit applications for seats on the County Planning Commission by filling in an application at the Board and Commissions page of the county website - https://www.albemarle.org/its/boards/. 

Albemarle County is reminding citizens that the final deadline for filing land use revalidation forms is December 5, 2009.   Anyone who does not file a revalidation form by December 5, 2009,  will be removed from the land use program and will face the possibility of being assessed “rollback taxes”, which means they would be responsible for the past five years of deferred taxes plus interest. 

General firearm season opens in Albemarle County this Saturday November 14, 2009 and runs through January 2, 2010. The Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office have received funding through the Board of Supervisors to enhance hunting control.

Volunteers are needed on Sunday November 15, 2009 to help plant 1,350 trees along the stream bordering the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport. The event planners, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport (CHO) and the Rivanna Conservation Society (RCS) estimate that a total of 7 acres will be enhanced to become Riparian Buffer to provide additional protection to the waterway from runoff pollution from surrounding land.

Albemarle County was accepted as an Exemplary Environmental Enterprise (E3) into the Department of Environmental Quality’s Virginia Environmental Excellence Program on Wednesday, November 4, at the Board of Supervisors meeting in Lane Auditorium.  The acceptance was conferred by Larry Simmons, who is the Deputy Director of DEQ’s Valley Regional Office.

The new Advance Mills bridge should be open to traffic by the end of the year, the Virginia Department of Transportation announced today.

As the time change approaches on Sunday, November 1, Albemarle County Department of Fire Rescue wants to remind residents to make another change that could save their lives — changing the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

The Albemarle County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, October 27, at 6:00 pm at Lane Auditorium at the County Office Building on McIntire Road to take public comment on the Places29 Master Plan draft. 

The City of Charlottesville is making the finishing touches to its first fall Community Job Fair on Tuesday, October 20th from 10am until 3pm at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville. 

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors will hold its annual Strategic Planning Retreat on Friday, October 16, from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Virginia Department of Forestry Building in Fontaine Research Park.   

As we enter the fall leaf-burning season, Albemarle County fire officials are reminding residents of these important legal requirements and safety tips for residents who are planning to burn leaves.   

Albemarle County firefighters are teaming up with Domino’s Pizza to promote functioning fire detectors as part of Fire Prevention Week. 

The Albemarle County Police Department’s Animal Control Unit in a coordinated effort with the Virginia Department of Health and the local SPCA would like to remind citizens that next week is Rabies Awareness Week (September 28 to October 4).

On October 1, 2009, Albemarle County will begin using a combined Sign Permit Application and Checklist.

In support of the County’s commitment to energy reduction and climate protection, Albemarle has set an aggressive goal of reducing the energy consumption from municipal buildings by 30% by 2012.

Crozet residents are invited to a town meeting on Wednesday evening, September 30, from 7:00 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm for a meet and greet) – 9:00 pm at Western Albemarle High School to talk with Albemarle County staff about infrastructure projects planned and underway for Crozet including the new library, streetscape improvements for Crozet Avenue, affordable housing project at the Meadows, downtown Historic District, and update of the Crozet Master Plan. 

Bring your family and friends to the 1st Annual Crozet Health and Wellness Fair. On Sunday, October 18th, the Crozet Business Networking Group is sponsoring the 1st Annual Crozet Health Fair from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. at Crozet Baptist Church on St. George Avenue (near Downtown Crozet).  This free event is promoting healthy living for all ages, with over 20 Crozet health care professionals providing free health screenings, education, assessments and other services.

A Monument Honoring Meriwether Lewis will be unveiled and presented to Albemarle County Virginia at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009.  The public is invited to attend this ceremony in front of the Albemarle County Courthouse.  

Emergency services personnel from Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville will conduct a remembrance of September 11, 2001, at a ceremony to be held in front of the Albemarle County Office Building on Friday, September 11, beginning at 5:00 pm. 

In coordination with the National Cyber Security Alliance, a diverse group of concerned local organizations are working together again this year to promote cyber security awareness in the greater Charlottesville/Albemarle regional area during October, National Cyber Security Awareness Month, including sponsoring the community’s first Cyber Security Awareness Video Contest.
