Liberation and Freedom Day Events

The community is invited to commemorate Liberation and Freedom Day at a series of events happening over the next week. Liberation and Freedom Day, March 3, marks the anniversary of local emancipation in Albemarle and Charlottesville in 1865. All of the events are free and open to the public.

Thursday, February 28, 7 pm
Concert with Dr. Roland Wiggins
Jefferson Theater

Friday, March 1, all day
Soil sample from lynching site of Mr. John Henry James display
Central Library, JMRL

Saturday, March 2, 9 am
Walking Tour and Speakers
Court Square (9 am) and Jefferson School African American Heritage Center (10:30)

Sunday, March 3, 3 pm
Service and Blessing Ceremony, Memorial to Enslaved Laborers
UVA Rotunda
