Free Collection and Disposal of Unwanted Medications and Sharps

The Albemarle County Police Department is partnering with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital to host a FREE drive-through event to collect and dispose unwanted medications and sharps.

Any expired or unwanted prescriptions and over-the-counter medications and syringes will be accepted on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at the Sentara Martha Jefferson Patient Transport Area (back of hospital) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The collection and disposal service is anonymous, no questions will be asked.

To be accepted, household medical sharps must be in a puncture-proof container, such as a laundry detergent bottle or red sharps container.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue and it is part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's (DEA's) national effort to provide an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

In addition to this initiative, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.

NOTE: This FREE event is for citizens, not businesses or doctors' offices.
