Household Hazardous Waste & Bulky Waste Days

Households and businesses of Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and the Town of Scottsville are encouraged to take advantage of Rivanna Solid Waste Authority’s (RSWA) hazardous waste and bulky waste amnesty special collection days being held this fall at the Ivy Material Utilization Center or Ivy "MUC" located on Route 637 (Dick Woods Road), 3.3 miles south of I-64. RSWA will be posting wait times every hour, on the hour at their website, to better serve its customers.

Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event: Friday, September 30, 2016 and Saturday, October 1, 2016
The next Household Hazardous Waste Special Collection event will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 from 9am - 2pm and Saturday, October 1, 9am - 2pm. For information on what items are accepted for this event, visit Additionally, three Amnesty Days will be held at Ivy MUC on the following dates:

Furniture / Mattresses Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016  |  8:30am-4pm
Household Appliances Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016  |  8:30am-4pm
Tires Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016  |  8:30am-4pm

Commercial Hazardous Waste Collection Day: Thursday, September 29, 2016
The next special commercial hazardous waste collection day is Thursday, September 29, 2016 by appointment only. This special collection is only open to qualifying businesses and commercial establishments – not households. Qualifications are defined by federal law to include businesses that:

  • generate no more than 100 kilograms (220 pounds) hazardous waste in a month,
  • generate no more than 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) acutely hazardous waste in a month, and
  • store not more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) hazardous waste.

To participate in this event, businesses must pre-register with CARE Environmental Corp. via email with John Doffinger ( or Jim McKenna ( There is a fee associated with disposal.

Rivanna Solid Waste Authority is dedicated to protecting and improving the environment by providing the recycling, solid waste, hazardous waste disposal services as requested by the City and County. RSWA assists thousands of City and County residents each year with their recycling, solid waste, and hazardous waste disposal.
