Charlottesville and Albemarle County Host USA Cycling Team Prior to UCI World Championships in Richmond
6/4/2015

The Charlottesville Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau to provide lodging and meals to athletes and coaches for them to get physically and mentally prepared in the destination

The Charlottesville and Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau (CACVB) announced today that the USA Cycling Team has chosen Charlottesville and Albemarle County as the location for their training base camp prior to the UCI World Championships. For the ten days leading to this prestigious sporting event in Richmond, Virginia beginning September 19 through 27, the athletes will work diligently to get physically and mentally ready in this destination.

During their stay in Charlottesville, the athletes will collaborate with the CACVB in participating in a number of events, which will contribute to establish the area as a top cycling destination. These events will include a media meet & greet as well as a special evening event at the Paramount Theater. More details will be provided in the upcoming weeks.

Local area cycling athletes Andrea Dvorak and Ben King were the first to bring the idea of training in this destination to their coaches. As cycling pros, they are the first to say that Charlottesville and Albemarle County are wonderful destinations for cyclists. “I came to Charlottesville as an undergraduate at the University of Virginia as a swimmer and runner. At the time, I did not even own a bicycle,” says Andrea. “Over the course of the next four years, I discovered cycling, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and I fell in love with the endless rural roads that meander through Charlottesville, Albemarle County and beyond. I've ridden my bike in many places around the world, and can honestly say that Charlottesville is my favorite place to ride. I am excited about the opportunity for Team USA to experience the City and County’s roads, culture, and history as the Team prepares for its own historic event, the World Championships.”

“Charlottesville and Albemarle County will play a crucial role in our success at the UCI Road World Championships, as it will be our final tune-up before competing in nearby Richmond,” said USA Cycling Vice-President of Athletics, Jim Miller. “The similar climate, road conditions and proximity to Richmond will be huge for our athletes, as we try to gain every edge possible to best represent the U.S. at Worlds. Thanks so much to the CACVB, Albemarle County, and the city of Charlottesville for allowing us to train and prepare in their beautiful destination.”

Kurt Burkhart, Executive Director for the CACVB, estimates that the benefits and repercussions of having Team U.S.A. train in our own backyard will be invaluable. “We could not be happier to have the U.S. Cycling Team spend time in our destination prior to the big race,” said Burkhart. “I cannot think of a more effective way to tell the world that Charlottesville and Albemarle County are wonderful cycling destinations. Having pros like Andrea or Ben share their experiences with thousands of cycling enthusiasts and their entire fan base is, in itself, the type of endorsement that is invaluable to a destination. We know that the benefits of this special visit will last for years to come.”

The USA Cycling Team will be in Charlottesville from September 9 through the 19, 2015. Details about the events scheduled with the athletes and their support staff will be announced in the upcoming weeks.
