Bright Stars Applications Due March 31st for Fall Enrollment

The Albemarle County Public Schools Preschool Program is currently accepting applications for eligible 4-year-olds to enroll in the Bright Stars Program; a state and locally funded program for students potentially at risk for developmental or educational issues. Please submit applications by March 31st for consideration for fall enrollment.

The Bright Stars Program is offered at Agnor-Hurt, Cale, Greer, Red Hill, Scottsville, Stone Robinson, Stony Point and Woodbrook Elementary Schools. Eligibility for the program is based on need. When evaluating eligibility many variables are considered including low income, limited education or illiteracy of the parent, single parent household, family stressors such as unemployment or mental/physical health problems, siblings who have had difficulty in school, limited English proficiency, and cognitive, social or behavioral delays. To qualify children must reside in Albemarle County and turn 4 by September 30th 2015.

The program, which is free to all eligible participants, includes a daily 6 1/2 hour school day, and school bus transportation to and from school. Breakfast, snack and lunch can be brought from home or purchased. Those who qualify can receive free or reduced cost meals. Children engage in active learning experiences that promote language and literacy, math, science and social studies as well as social interactions and physical activity. Enrollees are served in their neighborhood schools, where they will be attending kindergarten, with few exceptions.

For more information and to obtain an application, parents should call their local elementary school and ask to speak with the Bright Stars Family Coordinator. Applications are also available at the Albemarle County Department of Social Services, the MACAA/Head Start office, or online at /department.asp?department=dss&relpage=3897.
