Albemarle County Kicks Off Regional Firearms Training Center

Albemarle County is working with regional partners to develop a regional firearms training center on Milton Road in eastern Albemarle.  The center will provide unprecedented training and education in the use of firearms and will improve the safety and effectiveness of our local law enforcement agencies. There will be a community meeting regarding the new training center at the East Rivanna Volunteer Fire Company on Thursday, May 22, 2014 from 6 – 7:30pm. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend.

The construction and operations of the facility will be funded jointly through a partnership between Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, and the University of Virginia (UVa). Additionally, the region was awarded approximately $2.9 million from the Office of the Attorney General of Virginia in December 2013, to fund capital costs associated with the construction of the center.

After an extensive site selection assessment, the Board of Supervisors made the decision to locate an enclosed center at a site owned by UVa on Milton Road. The proposed site currently houses an outdoor firing range, which is owned and utilized by UVa. The completion of the new facility will result in the permanent closure of the existing outdoor firing range and will house all operations within a structure.

This project is a high priority for our region, because as we grow and our issues become more complex, joint and multidisciplinary training becomes increasingly critical. The new center will allow multiple agencies to train together in preparation for joint responses.
