Albemarle PD Prepares for Foxfield Spring Races

The Albemarle County Police Department is preparing for the Foxfield Spring Race and would like to share some information regarding this event. The Spring running of the Foxfield Races will be held on Saturday, April 26th, 2014. The Spring race has developed into a major event for thousands of college students and young adults. Attendance at the Spring race typically ranges from 15,000 – 25,000. This is the ninth year of intensified enforcement efforts surrounding the event. The gates open at 9:00 am and the first race is scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm. The last race is at approximately 4:00 pm.

Traffic will be impacted by the influx of cars and buses traveling to and from the event. Expect delays the entire day, especially during peak travel times in the morning and late afternoon. Officers will be directing traffic along Barracks Road and Garth Road and also Free Union Road. If you are not attending the races, please avoid these areas.

The Albemarle County Police Department will work closely with local and state law enforcement, and several private partners, to ensure that this event is safe for spectators, guests and participants. The event will be staffed with resources from the Albemarle County Police Department, State Police, Albemarle County Sheriff’s Office, UVA Police, Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement, representatives from the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail, Emergency Communications Center, Fire & Rescue, CERT volunteers, civilian staff and IT support. Auxiliary Police Officers with the ACPD will also be on site and used in a support capacity as needed. The Foxfield Race Association has hired Cerberus Productions (CP) and Event Staffing Inc (ESI) to enforce private property rules, regulations and policies.

We would like to encourage everyone to plan in advance of this event. Please drink responsibly and have a designated driver if you do plan on drinking. We will be working hard to ensure that everyone is safe and has an enjoyable day at the races. Please do your part to help us in this endeavor.
