Albemarle County Police Department Accepting Applications for Auxiliary Police Officers

In a continuing effort to build capacity at the Albemarle County Police Department, the APCD will be accepting applications for two additional Auxiliary Police Officers or APOs. The volunteers would be a Level II Auxiliary Officer.

Level II officers are sworn with limited duties. The Level II APOs would typically work under the supervision of another paid officer, responding to calls together. The two-person team would cover calls that would typically take two officers, thus allowing other patrol officers to continue responding to calls for duty.

Level II Auxiliary Officers train at the Police Academy in Weyers Cave. The volunteers would complete approximately 319 training hours before being sworn in as an Auxiliary Officer. The requirements are established in accordance with the Department of Criminal Justice Services. The Level II APOs could be permitted to carry a firearm if the officer has completed all the firearms training requirements established by the Criminal Justice Services Board.

APOs would go through the same application process, background check and scrutiny as paid officers. Since the officers would be responding to calls and serving our community, they would be held to the same standard as all ACPD employees.

In early January, six Level III Auxiliary Police Officers were sworn in as the first Auxiliary force for the ACPD. If you are interested in applying to be a Level II Auxiliary Police Officer, an online application is available here. You can also contact Lt. Mike Wagner (972-4023) for additional information.
