Albemarle County Receives $149,678 Farmland Preservation Grant
1/24/2014

Albemarle County is one of eight localities awarded as part of the 2014 farmland preservation grant, Governor McAuliffe announced earlier this week. This grant is issued by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) and totals just over $1,058,000. Other county recipients include Clarke, Fauquier, Isle of Wright, James City, Rappahannock, and Stafford, as well as the City of Virginia Beach. Since 2008, state matching funds for the purchase of development rights program has totaled nearly $8.7 million.

Albemarle County will use the grant monies to continue its Acquisition of Conservation Easements (ACE) program, which offers landowners the opportunity to voluntarily sell a conservation easement to be held in trust for perpetuity. The ACE program started in 2000 and was one of the first three PDR programs in Virginia. To date, the ACE program has preserved over 7,500 acres on more than 44 properties. For more information about the County’s ACE program, please click here.

Localities must use the grant monies to preserve farmland within their boundaries through local Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) programs. PDR programs compensate landowners who work with localities to preserve their land permanently by voluntarily placing a perpetual conservation easement on it. This is the seventh time that the Commonwealth has provided state matching funds for certified local PDR programs.
