County Announces October 9 Information Open Houses on Northside Library, Convenience Centers

Albemarle County will provide information and an opportunity to talk to staff regarding two major projects underway in the County – the new Northside Library and new convenience centers – at a joint open house to be held on Wednesday, October 9, from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. in the second floor lobby and Room 235 of the County Office Building on McIntire Road.  The open house will be held immediately prior to work sessions on both of the issues with the Board of Supervisors beginning at 3:15 p.m. to allow the public an opportunity to view the materials and talk to staff before the work sessions begin.

Northside Library:
The Northside Library project will provide a permanent location for the Northside Library at 705 Rio Road (former Phillips Building) and also will provide long-term County warehouse/ storage space at a significant cost savings to the County.  Following two public meetings, the consultant has developed preliminary design concepts.  At the open house, the public will have an opportunity to:

  • view the progress of the design (site, interior and exterior), renderings of the design will be on display.
  • ask questions and provide feedback to the architect and staff on the design team.

Information on this project is available at

Convenience Centers:
The Board has determined that there is interest in opening three convenience centers and in continuing financial support of the McIntire Recycling Center, and staff was directed to proceed with opening at least one convenience center by July 1, 2014 and to arrange an opportunity for the public to provide input to the Board regarding the location and services to be provided at the convenience centers.   At the open house, the public will have an opportunity to:

  • view possible service areas intended to maximize recycling drop-off and waste disposal convenience for County citizens.
  • view likely recycling and waste disposal services to be provided at the convenience centers.
  • see photos of some convenience centers within the region that are similar to what is being proposed in Albemarle County.
  • see proposed criteria for evaluating the specific sites for the installation/operation of a convenience site.

An opportunity for public input will be provided during the Board of Supervisors work session following the Open House.
