Albemarle County Social Services Receives National Recognition for its Family Support Program

The Albemarle County Department of Social Services (ACDSS) was recognized in the April issue of Policy & Practice, a national magazine published by the American Public Human Service Association, for its Family Support Program. Albemarle’s Family Support Program has served an average of 164 children each year since its launch in 1998, providing services to support children’s growth and development, strengthen families, and promote school success through collaboration with the home, school, and community.

ACDSS has received numerous state and national awards for the Family Support Program. Highlights include:

  • 99.82% of the children served remained in their own homes and were not involved with the foster care system
  • 96.63% were not involved with Child Protective Services (safety and security of the children)
  • 72% of the children identified with having academic problems showed improved academic skills
  • 98% of the parents involved with the program strongly agreed that they benefitted from the Family Support Program and that they felt that their Family Support Worker gave them hope

“This national recognition attests to the work of our Family Support staff and our entire department,” says ACDSS Director, Kathy Ralston. “We are proud of the collaboration we have forged with the school division and with the community as a whole that has enabled the program’s success.”
