Albemarle County Police Foundation to Receive Canine Fund Donation
12/20/2012

Today, the Albemarle County Police Foundation will be receiving a check from the City of Charlottesville and American Heritage Voices Foundation on behalf of the four  host organizations that brought His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Charlottesville in October.  That visit brought in almost $380,000 in revenue, with a net profit of about $237,000.  Nearly $95,000 of that revenue has been divided up between 11 local organizations, including The County of Albemarle Police Foundation. Charlottesville Mayor Satyendra Singh Huja will present the check with leaders from American Heritage Voices Foundation.

The funds donated to the Police Foundation will directly support our Canine Fund, which is  supported entirely by the Police Foundation.  We have three handlers and dogs in our K-9 Unit. LuLu is a two year old Bloodhound, Bink is a seven year old patrol dog and Drak is a seven year old bomb dog.  These K-9 officers were on hand during the Dalai Lama’s visit and helped provide scene security.

The K-9 program is a very important part of our Patrol Unit.  K-9 LuLu is qualified as “search-ready” and the tracking team of LuLu and her handler completed a 50-hour Bloodhound Handling and Man-Trailing course at the South Carolina Department of Public Safety last December.  Drak is often used in our schools and buildings to help search for potential threats like a bomb.  Bink is a patrol dog and is a valuable asset in searching vehicles and buildings for drugs.

This gift will help ensure that our K-9s and their handlers have the proper funds to train and continue to do great police work.  Our K-9 Unit provides unique and important services to our community.
