Ivy Bridge Projects Subject of December 20 Hearing

VDOT invites input on Dick Woods Road, Broomley Road bridge replacements

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will host a public hearing on the proposed replacement of two bridges in the Ivy area of Albemarle County. It will be held Thursday, Dec. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Murray Elementary School, 3251 Morgantown Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

The hearing was previously scheduled for Oct. 30, but was postponed due to Superstorm Sandy.

VDOT proposes to replace the Route 637 (Dick Woods Road) bridge over Ivy Creek with a single-span pre-stressed concrete slab structure. The new bridge will be capable of carrying all legal loads.

Due to its significantly deteriorated condition, the Route 637 bridge was replaced in September 2012 with a temporary structure intended to help it last until the permanent replacement project could be completed. The temporary bridge will be put to use in another location once it is removed.

VDOT will close Route 637 to through traffic during construction, which is expected to last four months. Traffic will use Route 250 (Ivy Road) and Route 677 (Bloomfield Road) as the detour route. Route 637 carries 1,100 vehicles per day, according to a 2011 count.

The project’s estimated cost is $2.46 million and is subject to change as the design is finalized.
The Route 677 (Broomley Road) bridge over the Buckingham Branch Railroad is also slated for replacement. A single-span steel truss bridge capable of carrying all legal loads will replace the existing aged bridge.

VDOT proposes closing Route 677 to through traffic during the seven-month construction period. The detour route will be Route 677 (Old Ballard Road) to Route 676/678 (Owensville Road) to Route 250 (Ivy Road). A 2011 count shows that 740 vehicles use Route 677 daily.

The project’s cost is estimated at $4.68 million and is subject to change as the design is finalized.

Both projects will be advertised in December 2014, with construction to begin in April 2015.

Project plans and environmental documents, as well as right of way and easement information, will be available for review at the public hearing, as well as at VDOT’s Culpeper District Office located at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701, 540-829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623. Please call ahead to ensure that personnel are available to answer your questions.

VDOT staff will be available during the hearing to discuss the projects and answer questions. Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing. Written comments can also be submitted by Jan. 2, 2013, to Brian Arnold, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.
