Albemarle County Announces Sponsorship of Locavore Expo

The Locavore Expo of Tom Tom Founders Festival will celebrate innovation in the local food community on Saturday, May 12, from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm in conjunction with the Charlottesville Farmers’ Market.  The Expo will feature local chef demonstrations and tastings, a seed and starter exchange, and talks by leaders in local food, showcasing why the Charlottesville/Albemarle County community was named by Forbes as “the locavore capital of the world”.  The full schedule is available at the Tom Tom website and the event is sponsored by Albemarle County and is free and open to the public.

The Locavore Expo will extend the market to the downtown mall and into South Street Brewery, and is the concluding event of the Tom Tom innovation series. Throughout the month, the series has focused on place-based innovation in the community.   “The Tom Tom innovation series is showcasing big ideas being nurtured in our community,” says Natasha Sienitsky, the Expo’s organizer. “Local food is an area where our community has been particularly innovative. The Local Food Hub, for example, has become a national model”.

“As we celebrate our community’s innovation culture, the creativity and energy of our local food system is a natural highlight,” said Tom Foley, County Executive.  “Tom Tom is engaging people in the exciting story of our community, and that includes our agricultural heritage and the way it is evolving and contributing to our economic vitality.”
