Albemarle County Receives Community Development Block Grant Funds

The Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) awarded Albemarle County $185,200 from their Community Development Innovation Fund for the reconstruction of two substandard houses in the County.  The County’s application for funding was on behalf of the Albemarle Housing Improvement Program (AHIP), which will carry out the activities.

According to Ron White, the County’s Chief of Housing, Albemarle was one of five jurisdictions invited to submit an application for Innovation Funds.  The funds were made available to address some of the more serious, scattered-site housing conditions where access to other funding is limited or not available.  Conditions include structural deficiencies and lack of plumbing.  DHCD approved two houses meeting those criteria – one near Scottsville and one near Covesville.

“Albemarle County is very pleased with the award of these funds and appreciates the efforts of AHIP to put these dollars to good use for ensuring safe and secure housing for residents of the County,” said White in announcing the grant.

AHIP staff is currently in the planning phase of both reconstruction projects, and is also lining up volunteer support and private donations. Construction is scheduled to begin in June.

“AHIP helps our neighbors stay safe, warm and dry in their homes and we are thrilled to have the County and the state as our partners and supporters in creating new, energy-efficient and healthy homes for these homeowners in need.” said Jennifer Jacobs, AHIP’s Executive Director.  “Financial, in-kind and volunteer contributions from our community are essential for the success of these projects and they help us stretch our funds much further, close funding gaps, and build the best homes we possibly can for our client families.”

The County also submitted an application to DHCD in late March for the proposed Orchard Acres Housing Rehabilitation Program which would provide $700,000 dollars in funding for the community rehab project.  That application is pending with an announcement of awards expected in late June.
