Monticello AVA Big Winner at Governor's Cup

Scores on 11 of 12 Wines Selected for 2012 Governor's Case

Local grapes swept the competition at the 2012 Governor’s Cup Award held recently in Richmond. 11 of the 12 top scoring wines that were selected for inclusion in the 2012 Virginia Governor’s Case were produced from grapes grown in the Monticello AVA (American Viticultural Area), cementing the reputation of Central Virginia as the premier grape growing region in Virginia. Eight of the winners are members of the Monticello Wine Trail, the trade association of the wineries in the Monticello AVA.   Wine enthusiasts can sample Monticello AVA wines at The Taste of Monticello Wine Trail Festival scheduled for Saturday, April 21 from 2:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at the nTelos Wireless Pavilion.

This year’s revamped Governor’s Cup competition featured more rigorous standards and more stringent judging than in past competitions. The contest was conducted in two rounds with a nationally recognized panel of judges that chose from among 109 Virginia wineries that entered a total of 420 wines.

“We are thrilled with the excellent performance of grapes grown in our region, and are very pleased that so many local wines will receive national and international visibility and recognition with their selection to the Virginia Governor’s Case,” said Kirsty Harmon, Winemaker & General Manager of Blenheim Vineyards and head of the Monticello Wine Trail Board.

Bluestone Vineyard, Delfosse Vineyards and Winery*, Jefferson Vineyards*, Keswick Vineyards* (2 gold medals), King Family Vineyards*, Potomac Point Winery, Tarara Winery, Trump Winery*, Veritas Vineyards and Winery*, and White Hall Vineyards* all used grapes grown in the Monticello AVA in their bottlings selected for the Governor’s Case.

The Virginia Governor’s Case of the 12 top scoring wines will be sent to wine publications, wine journalists and other wine competitions to showcase Virginia wine and expand the Virginia wine brand, ensuring broad visibility and recognition for the grape growing and wine making excellence of Central Virginia wineries.
